Compact rechargable modular flashligt. Good for lighting up a small room or tent. Can last a very long time depending on the power bank. This verson can use any other USB outlet too.

Another version uses 10 AA-batteries in series (10x1.2V=12V), however taking out and recharging every single one is far less convenient than recharging a power bank. AAA batteries could also be used as they are also 1.2V.

12V LEDs can be purchased from most grocery or convenience stores. Be aware that spot lights or other high-wattage lamps may be too powerful for your powerbank, power converter or if you have very slim wires somewhere.

Preferably, isolate soldering points and exposed wires by encasing unit with hot glue.

Power bank version

Materials:

Voltage converter, one of the following:

  • 5V to 12V USB converter (usually ordered from some website)
  • (may be expensive) Voltage converter/step-up-module (found at for example Kjell o company). This needs to be able to handle and ajusted for a step up from 5 to 12V! *

Toggle power switch

Light socket (size G4 fits most lamps, found at for example Kjell o Company or Claes Ohlsson).

*If using voltage converter, you also need a USB male connector. There's always some broken cable somewhere you can salvage a male connector from.

Instructions, voltage converter:

Solder the RED (+ wire) on the USB connector to the IN+ on the voltage converter. Do the same for the BLACK (- wire) and the IN-.

Solder one of the light socket wires to the power switch, and the other to OUT + or - on the voltage converter.

Use another wire to solder the remaining pin on the power switch to the remaining OUT + or - on the voltage converter

BEFORE INSERTING LAMP: Insert into power bank. Insert the pins on a multimeter into the light socket and adjust voltage output to 12V, usually by turning the visible brown screw on the blue box on the picture above.

Instructions, integrated voltage converter:

Solder the RED (+ wire) on the USB connector to  the IN+ on the voltage converter. Do the same for the BLACK (- wire) and the IN-.

Solder one of the light socket wires to the power switch, and the other to OUT + or - on the voltage converter.

Use another wire to solder the remaining pin on the power switch to the remaining OUT + or - on the voltage converter

AA-battery version

Materials:

AA-battery holder with series connection. Either a 10 slot version or several connected in series adding up to 10 slots (below I use an 8 and a 2 slot variant).

Toggle power switch

Light socket (size G4 fits most lamps, found at for example Kjell o Company or Claes Ohlsson).

Instructions:

Connect in series as described below
